Public health is taking on a more robust focus on the social determinants of health and health equity at the global, national, state and local levels. This is reflected in the Healthy People 2020 goals and many of the initiatives sponsored by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and national health organizations. Social justice and equity are the foundation of efforts to improve health status for populations. In an effort to address barriers to good health and well being, public health workers become practitioners at the state and local levels to assure access to healthy food, active lifestyles, and health promotion, prevention and preventative health care resources. This is a winning professional partnership with epidemiologists, teachers, nurses, physicians, health educators, social workers and nutritionists. Often, professionals enter public health practice without an understanding of public health principles, core functions and the ten essential public health services, and of the importance of addressing population-based approaches to improve health outcomes for all communities. The course will include multi-media content covering the history of intertwining professional paths, the tools of public health practice, and an exploration of the determinants of health. The work of reaching a goal of health equity by addressing the social determinants of health raises the bar and together, we will meet the challenge.
