Okhumode Yakubu, MPH student, led an initiative to replace styrofoam with bio-degradable products from campus food service areas. This student-led public health and environmental health initiative is important for sustainability and our health. Styrene, a monomer of polystyrene (styrofoam), is considered a “reasonably anticipated carcinogen” by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Polystrene does not biodegrade. ASNMSU supported the initiative with recent approval of the resolution. Other universities already ban styrofoam on campuses. For more information, see details here.
