Program Overview

The Master of Public Health degrees include one with a concentration in Health Behavior and Health Promotion (HBHP) and one with a concentration in Health Management, Administration, and Policy (HMAP). Both require 42 credit hours of instruction, a field placement experience, and a culminating project consisting of an Integrative Learning Experience (ILE) or Thesis.

We deliver the HBHP degree program in a traditional, on-campus format and online via distance education technology. We deliver the HMAP concentration online only.

Field Experience

The field experience is a required and integral part of the MPH programs in the NMSU Department of Public Health Sciences. The field experience allows students to apply classroom learning to real-world problems and solutions. Placements are made according to the student’s career goals and location preferences. The field experience should occur in your senior year as a BCH student and after the second semester as an MPH student.

Thesis and Non-thesis Options

Thesis. Those electing to complete a thesis must enroll in 6 credits of thesis during their degree program.

Integrative Learning Experience (Non-thesis Option). Most students elect the non-thesis option, which includes completing an integrative learning experience (ILE ) that is based on the student’s field experience. Additional information can be found in the Graduate Student Handbooks.

Additional information on these options is contained in the Graduate Catalog.

Minors

Students may also elect to complete one of the Department’s two minors or any graduate minor offered at NMSU.

Course Sequencing

Because we offer a wide range of courses, many in both on-campus and online formats, we require students to adhere to a strict sequencing of courses to ensure timely degree completion.
